  1. What attracted me to this book was how involved and detailed it was, with the primary focus in my book being about Mariam who has to live a completely different life then what she wants to live. She is forced into this life and doesn't know how to get out. My initial thoughts on the book was that it had a very slow start, it was kind of confusing in the beginning because it didn't start off like in a story i believe it started off with a flashback, i really don't know. Now that i am several chapters in the book makes more sense then it did in the beginning.

  2. I'm reading I am Malala. When I started it I read the prologue first it mostly got me situated with what happened during the shotting and after her and her family had to flee to safety. Then I got to ch1 and it's boring and not where I wanted it to be. I'm hoping it gets better and more existing

    1. Hope, i do agree that it is getting slow in chapter 1 and i think it will get more exciting once it keeps going on throughout the book.

    2. Hope, I also think that the first few chapters are sort of slow. However, I think that Malala sharing the history of Pakistan and the Taliban is going to be important so that we are better able to understand the culture and the situations that she is in.

    3. Hope, I would agree that the book is slow in the beginning. I would also have to say that I think that is how most of the book will be but it will be good to learn about and understand how others countries view such subjects.

    6. Hope, I feel the same way. It's like she hooked us in the beginning in the prologue and then goes really boring instead of keeping it interesting. It may be a slow start at first, but you never know, it could pick up and become really interesting. I really hope you can come to enjoy the book.

  3. the book i am reading is The kite runner by Khaled Hosseini, what attracted me to this book is how mrs broadbent explained it, she really hooked me in. the focus in our book right now is amir just explaining his past and he talks about his relationship between him and hassan, one thing that caught me off guard is when hassan and his father tell baba that they are leaving the house and are no longer going to work for they anymore, after reading the first few chapters i think the book is good so far, something that confuses me is all the names for baba, i think the book is not a slow start but doesn't go right into it, something in-between that. overall its pretty good.

  4. The new novel I chose was A thousand Splendid Suns. What attracted me to this novel was the description on the back of the book, the book cover and the packet that Mrs. Broadbent gave us. I have never read a book like this with such detail and interest. i would say the primary focus in my novel is around Mariam and how her life is different than ours. I'm currently in chapter ten and it sounds like she is struggling a little right now because of all the unexpected events and realizing life isn't as great as she thought it was and she has to learn how to grow up quick. My initial thoughts on the book are surprising and interesting because i wasn't expecting half of the stuff that has already happened. the first chapter i was kind of lost because there was so much information and different events happening but after that i wrote down notes to help me understand better I was hooked.

  5. I am reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, I was drug to this book because of the way it was reviewed. I heard from a lot of people the great impact they got from this book. The primary focus in this novel (from what I have read) is a custom in Afghanistan, kite running. From what I have read, Amir and Hassen fly kites in this tournament, sometimes they are the kite runners which means they run after the kites if they fall from the sky. I have not gotten to a point where I feel there is a problem yet. I think it is about to unravel but I have not gotten to it yet. I really enjoy this book, I have not wanted to put it down. I did not find it very confusing like my last book. I think it jumped right in and has some flashbacks of their childhood and of their present time. I find this book to be a very enjoyable book and have already felt like it left a impact from the first few chapters!

  6. I chose the book Night I chose it because I wanted to learn more about what happened at the concentration camps. The primary focus of this novel is that it describes Elie Wiesel's real life experiences while in the concentration camps. After reading the first initial chapters of the book my initial thoughts are that I think the book is starting of slow and it has been a little confusing with some of the different names of cities/states/country's. I hope that the book will eventually get more fast pace and more interesting.

  7. I am reading the book A Thousand Splendid Sons by Khaled Hosseini. This book attracted me to read because it sounded like a book just about two women who find each through one guy and have an un-breakable friendship at an unforgivable time. I have only met 3 characters which are Mariam Jo, Nana (Mariam Jo's mom) and Jalil (Mariam Jo's dad). The focus in the book is Mariam to have a better life with her father and to know who her half brothers and sisters are. My initial thoughts is that the book starts right away and its really good. I did get lost through the second chapter but after reading a little more I slowly caught on what was exactly happening in the book. My first impressions of the book was it was going to be about a married man who has an affair with another women and is still married to his first wife.

  8. the primary focus for my novel is staying alive and running away from the rebels. not very well they are just running around to other villages, and they are just kids I think that the book will very soon get exciting not a slow start at all my first impressions of this book is that he will be scared by loud noises after what has happened and that he doesn't make it out alive

  9. The things that attracted me the most with this novel was the main topic. A Long Way Gone is about a teenage boy caught in a civil war in his home country. since i just started the book, the main characters are just starting to see some parts of the war, by seeing wounded civilians and dead bodies laying places. initially, the book starts out kind of slow, but towards the end of the 1st chapter, it begins to describe the environment of the war better. first impressions are that this book seems like it will get interesting, but i will just have to wait until later in the book.

    2. I agree Wyatt, I think this book will turn into something crazy by the time we are halfway through the book. It will be interesting to see what happens with the people involved and how to young kids react to being in a war at such a young age. Young kids are in no way mature enough to be in a war let alone fighting in it.

    3. i agree that i hope it gets even better as i start to read more of this book and i hope it grows into something crazy towards the middle of the book

  10. the new book I am reading is A long way gone By Ishmael Beah. I chose this book not as my first choice but I am reading it anyway. The front cover looks interesting and the story seemed somewhat interesting.in this book the main character is living in a a very violent town and people are killed on a regular. He is handling this situation by keeping his mouth shut and not snitching to protect himself. My initial thoughts on this book are I am only a couple chapters in and i think its a little confusing right now because there all over the place on the story telling and its a little slow to start the book so that makes it hard to get hooked.

  11. The reason I chose the book Night and was attracted to it was because I like to learn about the time during world war 2 and how it was in Germany. The primary focus in the book Night is a persons own experience in Auschwitz and what he had to go through during this time period. As of right now in the book it is hard to tell how the characters are handling it, some seem calm and some are freaking out a little bit in the moment. I am a little confused about the starting of the book and what is going on. I think it jumps right into it and that is why i am confused.

  12. A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah, the main focus is on how war affects children, especially child soldiers. The story follows Ishmael, a regular boy from Sierra Leone who enjoys rap music and spending time with his friends. His life changes quickly when the war reaches his village, and he is forced to run for his life. He becomes separated from his family and has to survive on his own. At first, he is scared and confused, not fully understanding what is happening, but he learns to adapt in order to stay alive. The book jumps right into the action. It doesn't have a slow start within the first few pages, everything changes for Ishmael. This fast pace makes the story more intense and emotional. My first impression of the book is that it’s powerful, heartbreaking, and eye opening. In the beginning, it shows how war can steal a person’s childhood and change them forever.

    1. I agree with this. The book will show the life altering effects of war as a child. War is scary for anyone but to be a child and actually fighting in the war is a whole different story. I also agree that the book jumps right into the action because only a few pages in there is already war going on in his city. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

    2. I agree with this the focus of the book definitely about how war affects children and how children have to become soldiers to fight for their lives and their country.

  13. I am reading the book The Kite Runner. What attracted me to this book was the story of the two young boys who are so close but come from totally different social standings. After reading the first few chapters I have become very interested in this book and i am eager to watch Amir and Hassan's relationship change.

  15. I was interested in I Am Malala because it is a recent event and it talks about things that are still happening in Pakistan today. This novel focuses on education in Pakistan especially for girls, Malala still goes to school but is now focusing on education worldwide. After reading the first few chapters I think that she goes into great detail of the history of Pakistan and how it has effected her life and her parents lives. Though it may be boring to read I think that it is important that she included it so the reader has a full understanding of the issues and culture in Pakistan.

  16. I'm reading a long way gone, and what drew me to this book was the war and fighting and the guns that were gonna happen in it. The main focus of the book is that the boys are running for their lives and trying not to get killed or captured by the rebels. After reading the first four chapters of this book I got hooked and couldn't put it down because it's so intense and so action packed that it's hard to stop reading it. 19. I am reading I am Malala. The thing that attracted me to the book at first was the woman's rights and the education that they got there. The primary focus as of now is the culture in Pakistan and how her life came to be as they discussed their family background and also tying in the culture of where they live. I personally think that the book is interesting in a way but I think that it is going to be hard to read because there is not much of a plot in the story other than what I already know of her being shot.

  21. In the book I chose, A long way gone by Ishmael Beah, Ishmael faces a big problem in his country of Sierra Leone, Africa. His problem comes when rebels start to rise up against the government in an all-out civil war like the north versus the south. Ishmael is doing his best to handle it by sticking by his older brother and friends' side while traversing through empty villages and seeing people get killed in front of him. My initial thoughts on this book are that it is very real and very gory, and it tells you details it wish it didn't because you don't want to image what that looks like in your mind. This book jumps right in and stays at the same speed for all I've read up to at this point and I think it will be a great read.

  23. I am reading I Am Malala. What attracted me to this book was the lack of death in it. Why does every single book we read involve some kind of death? The primary focus of my book is just Malala's life and how she became a spokesperson for women's rights. I think this book is moving very slowly and is not super interesting. She is talking about her village and her family and it's just not really something I can relate to. I don't really like how this book is starting. It began exciting, she told the story of her getting shot, and then it immediately jumped into the boring stuff. I want to know why you are a spokesperson for women's rights...I don't want to hear about how your parents got married Malala. I'm not a very big fan of this book so far.

The primary focus of this novel is how children have to become soldiers and fight for their country to be able to live a comfortable life and not in war. Ishmeal is kind of shocked that the war is in his country and now in his town and he was looking for his family that had scattered away when the rebels invaded their town. Ishmeal also seen many people carrying dead people away from the rebels. My first initial thought of this book is that it is a really interesting book and it has a lot of graphic content. 29. The book I was assigned was A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah. There is a war going on in Sierra Leone which is right by where Ishmael Beah lives. The rebels are trying to overtake the government its land. Ishmael Beah will soon pick up a gone and start fighting against these rebels and the very young age of just thirteen. I was attracted to the book because a young boy, especially thirteen, fighting in a war sounds absolutely insane. He is barely a teenager and had picked up a gun to fight in a war. Right now, the primary focus is the war just moved into their hometown, so they are trying to figure out what is going on and what to do. The characters are not handling it the best because they are walking directly into a war scene which has very high risk. After the first few pages the book jumps in pretty quick with the war moving into their hometown just a few pages in. It will be interesting to see what happens when they get back to see what all is going on. So far, the book seems to be an interesting read.

Honestly i didn't even get to chose to read this book since i missed the days where i had a chance to, but i ended up getting stuck with 'The Kite Runner', and after reading the first 4 chapters of this book i can confidently say that it sucks, like really really bad. The author of this book explains small things for paragraphs on end about things that really don't matter whatsoever, also there are so many words that I've never heard in this book which is annoying. This book attracted me right away when it was explaining that they were gonna be talking about a civil war in a foreign country, I've always really liked books based on true stories and especially books about war. But this book really jumps right into the action with them sneaking out of there hometown to go to a talent show that they wanted to attend but they knew there parents wouldn't let them go so they just snuck out. My first thought of this book have been very interesting with the way they explain all the massacring that is going on on there way back with the rebels killing a lot of innocent people and families Infront of these little kids eyes.

  32. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by The Kite Runner and what really hooked my attention to want to read this book was about the lifestyle. All of these books have a very interesting way of living or way of seeing life. One thing that this book is so interesting is that the father has multiple wives and to me i was shocked. So i wanted a chance to read this book and know how it will affect their life and way of comparing thmselves from others.

    1. I also found it very interesting that the father has multiple wives. It made me think of what it would be like if we had people around her doing that.

    2. A Thousand Splendid Suns sounds like a really good book, if I chose to read that book I'd want to learn more about the father have multiple wives and if any of them find out about each other and if he learns from his lesson and decides to have one wife instead of multiple.

  33. I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. I chose this book because i have always loved learning about world history, and wanted to learn more about the holocaust and what happens at the concentration camps, like how the jews were treated and all the terrible things that happened to them. This book is pretty confusing at the start, but the farther i have got along i have been wanted to know what is gonna happen next. Everything is happening so fast and the unfamiliar names of places and people might be a reason i am having a slow start to this book.

  34. The main thing that attracted me to the book The Kite Runner was the fact that even though the rich kid Amir knew he would be bullied for being friends with his poor servant Hassan he still chose to be friends with him. I'd say that the main focus of the book is telling the story of an unlikely friendship between a poor boy and a rich boy to which they handle it like they are brothers, if one is being picked on the other is standing up for them. For my initial thoughts on the book, it started out kind of slow and boring but as i continued to read it became very intriguing.

    1. I also chose to read this book because of the story of friendship. I agree that the book is starting off slow and I hope it starts to get a little more interesting as I continue to read.

  35. I agree, the stories about people in the holocaust are really interesting. The book has been getting better as it goes on. I hope you continue to like reading this book

  36. I am reading I am Malala. It has a very slow start with talking about her childhood and how it was when she was born. It talks about her father's past and how his child hood was. The primary focus is sharing about her life living in Pakistan and getting shot in the head and surviving. Malala is handling the situation good and is sharing her story for the world to know how it was and how it happened. She will share how bad is to live in Pakistan as a female. My initial thoughts on the book is that is has a really slow start. It like we are going through her life chapter by chapter. It's an alright book and I do not have much of an opinion on it.

    1. I agree that this book is really slow. I wish it talked more about her because i want to grow more connected to her, but we're getting a lot about the history of Pakistan and Dad. Which is fine, but I guess I just want to walk quicker through her life.

  37. i am reading a long way gone and i believe what attracted me to this book is the unfamiliarity of Sierra Leone and the civil war that it faced and about the cultures and traditions that are apart of Sierra Leones culture the primary focus in the novel is about Ishmael Beah and his friends trying to survive on their own and trying not to get captured by the rebels who are slaughtering hundreds of people and the 6 little boys are handling it exceptionally well given their situation, my initial thoughts on the book is that it is such a greatbook already with alot of action right at the start im looking forward to reading alot more of this book.

  39. I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel and what attracted me to this book was the time period it takes place in. I've always like watching and reading stuff about World War II and the holocaust because it's always so interesting to learn about what all happened during that time. The book is off to a crazy start like in the first couple pages it talks about how the German soldiers were throwing Jewish babies into the air and using them as target practice. Other than that, I think it's going to be a good book

  40. I am reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. the reason i chose this book for my top three was because i wanted to know how life growing up in a different country was like and the different struggles people go through. The primary focus of this book is Amir and what decisions he made when he was growing up when Amir was growing up he had to make a lot of tough decisions and some he regrets but the one he most regrets is loosing his best friend the one person that he shared everything with. my initial thoughts of this book so far is its interesting i wouldn't say the book jumped right into things but the author didn't wait a few chapters to start things.

  42. I am reading the book A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah and what attracted me to this book was the fact I have always enjoyed learning about the civil war. It tells a different side of the war from a different perspective which made me intrigued in the book more. The main focus about this novel is how it is these forign kids trying to survive the civil war and the main character has to try and live and fight at a very young age and the story is accounts from his perspective. My initial thoughts currently is it is a very graphic and interesting book.

  44. What made me want to read this book is that I was interested in the story of friendship and how the kite played an important part in it. So far I don't really like the book and I think that it's a little boring. I feel like it will be better towards the middle of the book when the kite will probably start getting talked about. I hope I'm right because this will be a long book to read if not.

  45. I had no particular reason for picking the book except that I wanted to read another fiction book. The kite runner seems to be based on the "friendship" between two boys and the inner monologue of the main boy, Amir. The book has a very slow first chapter, and then we spend the next couple chapters just understanding the main character and his relationship with Hassan. Its not the most interesting thing in the world but i look forward to seeing where it ends up.

  46. I am currently reading the book A Long Way Gone and what made me want to read this book was because of the civil war since I don't know a whole lot about civil war or read about civil war, I thought that I'd give it a try with this book. the story is told by a little kid's perspective which I thought was really interesting. And I think as kids they don't seem to be feared when there seeing dead body's left and right. they're handling their situation as kids pretty well and I like how the book just jumps from the start.

  47. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. This book sounded the most interesting to me, and so far it has been very good. I've read three chapters so far and although the book is a little confusing I can still understand it. I feel like the book jumps right into the good stuff. The main character seems like she has a ruff life with her dad leaving her and her mom and just the environment they live in. I haven't read much so I don't have a lot to say but I am very excited to continue reading!

  48. I chose this book because it talked about how her life goes and how she was shot and why she was shot. It focuses more on the narrator and her family that I've read so far, like how her mother ran away from home because Malala's mother thought it was pointless to go to school just to come home to clean and cook so she left school and it's Malala's father's dreams to have his own school and Malala's mother wants to help him with that dream. Their trying to get through in life because Malala's fathers dream came true and he got his own school to run so he must be happy with that, but for a while the family has been struggling with money and trying to get Malala's father's dreams to come true. The story is a little slow. I'm starting to like the book more and more but the chapter's are pretty short right now and the beginning of the book is kind of slow.

  49. Im reading A Thousand Splended Suns, mariam mom and dad are in a poligami marriage her dad has 9 wives and mariam has 12 siblings. it seems as if her mom doesnt like her though becasue she called her an unwanted bastard and she told mariam that she was sin. and i dont know if shes lying to her ablout one part in the book. she told mariam that she was born on the hard wood floor and that she had to cut the umbilical cord her slef but then her dad said that she was born at the hospitale and he made sure to bring her to the hospite to be born. so this book is pretty intresting in my opinion it was a little slow at first but its starting to get real intresting.

  50. I was interested in A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah because it’s a true story about a boy who lived through a war, which sounded really intense and different from anything I’ve read before. The book focuses on how Ishmael’s life changes when war reaches his village and he’s forced to run, survive on his own, and eventually become a child soldier. In the first few chapters, we already see how scary and confusing everything is for him. The book jumps right into the action and doesn’t waste time, which makes it interesting from the start. Even though it’s sad and serious, I think it’s really powerful and I’m curious to see how Ishmael’s story continues.

  51. I am reading I am Malala, and the part that hooked me was the prologue when she was explaining the day she got shot on the bus. After the prologue, though, it's been very slow for about 40 pages. She's just explaining the history of Pakistan and her surroundings and where she lives. It's interesting, but it feels like the story isn't starting yet. I know more about "swat" than Malala herself. I really hope it starts to pick up.
