  1. I choose Chinese Handcuffs because it was interesting to me and it seemed like a pretty normal book compared to the other ones, this book made more sense to me then all the other books. I am happy with my choice so far because it is easy to understand. My initial thoughts on the book is that it was realistic to real life situations and it was easy to understand and hopefully the book will continue to make sense through the book. The book is interesting so far and i am excited to find out more about the book as i read farther into it. The book connects to the outside world where people deal with suicide every day, and the lost of loved ones in their daily lifes.

    1. This was my third choice and it sounds like it was a good choice for you, do you have a favorite or least favorite character yet?

    2. Grace, this was not one at the top of my list... but after reading your summary I feel like I could have moved it up my list! It sounds to be a very interesting and catchy book. Do you think the suicide has anything to do with mental health? Or is there another factor as to why these people are struggling?

    3. Grace, I am also reading this book and I decided on this book for similar reasons but I also choose it because I can relate to it in a way and it was not all about sports like the other books options. Do you think that the characters are going to have a difficult time confiding in each other or do you think that they will have connect on a deeper level due to their loss?

    4. Grace, i agree with you on that this book is very realistic. Many people can relate to a death and i do agree it is a good and easy read and like you i hope it continued to be easy.

  2. The reason Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes was in my top three was because in the summary it sounded really interesting to me. I wanted to know more about the friendship between Sarah and Eric and know how they became friends and why he stayed fat for a whole year for her. I want to know what the significance was behind it and how important it was to Sarah. I also want to know more about Sarah because i feel like a lot of high school students are in her position and can relate with her.

    1. I chose Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes because it sounded like a really good book and I'm also into sports but I only did one sport through out high school. But it would be nice to learn about a new sport and learn about these people's story about their life. Another reason why Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes was in my top three was because the short summary's I read before I got the book it just seemed so interesting. And how Sarah and Eric support each other and help each other out is amazing but I want to know why Eric stayed fat for Sarah and why Eric thinks he's bad at sports.

    2. Lexi, this book was in my top three but I did not pick it as my first because I liked the other better but I would have to agree that I feel as though a lot of students do struggle with these things. The reason it stayed in my top three was also because I wanted to learn about their friendship as well. what is your favorite part/character of the story so far?

  3. I chose Running Loose for a couple reasons. First, because of the sports aspect of it. As an athlete myself, I can connect to some of the things that might be mentioned, even though I play a much different sport. I also chose this book because its description was the most catching of the four options. so far, I am happy with my choice, but not much has happened in the book since I'm only 1 chapter in. currently, the book is kind of enjoyable, but it is also boring because not much has happened. i am not able to make connections at this time, but maybe in the future.

    2. I agree! The sports factor can connect to me and a lot of us, and not just running loose but all the other books have something to do with sports. Sports is a huge part of most teenagers lives, and can make the book more interesting when reading

    3. I do agree, the book is rather boring at first and I definitely thought the introduction/1st few chapters start off very slow.

    4. i would agree that the book is boring to start off with, but it is only the first chapter so far so i am sure it will pick up quicker later on. i also picked the book for it's relation to sports as i felt it would be the only topic that could hold my intrest

  4. I chose to read Running Loose because I think the stories of Hero to Zero are interesting and can be unexpected. Loosing his spot in the football team is an interesting story because he is in a small town and they need all the help they can get to be on the team. Like what could he have done to be kicked off, and will or how will he get it back, and will other things go wrong in his life. The main character is a teenager seeing what the world can really be like might relate to me in a way. So far the book has been interesting, but we are really just learning the characters right now. And there has not been much that has happened so far

    4. I agree that the hero to zero aspect of the book is very interesting. I find it to be a refreshing take compared to the usual hero to zero stories seen today. I think it leaves the main character with more room to grow and learn as well as create a better story.

  5. I am glad I get to read Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes because it sounded the most interesting to me, after reading a couple of pages out of each book and reading the backs of each book. It was my first out of three choices between Staying Fat for Sarah Brynes, Stotan, and Chinese Handcuffs because of the mental health factors that affects me and others around me everyday. I am happy with my choice so far because I'm very interested in the book and it is hard to put it down when I start reading. My initial thoughts on the books are it is interesting how they are doing flashbacks to show how Sarah was before what is going on now where she does not speak. I find it enjoyable and interesting with how they are bringing up new characters and having Erics thoughts on them. I am making connections when they bring up a new character and I try to connect them to someone I know personally.

  7. I am very happy that I got chosen to read Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes because a piece of this book is mental health. People I know and myself have struggled with mental health, after reading this book it may help me to better understand other people's stories. I am super happy with my choice so far because I feel like this book is one I will be able to relate to and not feel forced to read. This is also kind of weird, but I judge books by their covers and this was one that passed the vibe check... Although I am only a chapter or so in the book, I am a little confused of what they are talking about. I do not know if they are talking about what is happening now or if they are doing some flashbacks of life before Sarah was admitted. That is the most confusing part so far but I am very excited to see where this book is going to go. I am finding this book to be enjoyable so far, this is the type of books I am into which helps! Interesting... so far yes because there is a ton of different things going on in one little chapter. As stated before, I do feel I am making connections with the book due to my mental health experiences. This book is one I know I will finish quickly because I will not want to stop reading!

  9. I choose Stotan because the sports aspect of the book intrigued me. The fact that they are the last generation to swim for their school appeals to me. I have not read enough to know if this book is the right choice for me, but i think it's readable. The scenes in the swimming pool draw you in through the challenges they face, not the swimming pool itself, but characters personalities start to show in a group setting. I can connect with their drive to do better. Everybody wants to do better in life whether that is at school, in a sport, or anything people strive to do better.

So far I am happy with my chose so far. But it has me questioning on why is this happening/ has happened. 12. My selection was Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and I am glad that is my selection. The idea of Sarah Byrnes being in the hospital intrigued me and I wanted to get to know more about why she was in the hospital. I also want to know more about Sarah's terrible secret that is mentioned on the back of the book. I feel that Sarah's hospitalization wasn't random and that she is there for a reason. That reason could be something with mental health. Mental health is a big thing for me because sometimes a person will be struggling inside but they don't show it outside. That's how I think it is for Sarah and why I connect with her, because I know people that personally struggle with that. I am also intrigued with the inclusion of past and present scenes in the book. That is what's keeping me interested and engaged.

  13. I chose Chinese Handcuffs because it seemed like a decent book compared to the others, and when I read the back it seemed interesting enough to go with it. It was in my top three because it seemed interesting book to read. I am fine with the choice so far, it is not that confusing. I am not far enough in it to really determine if I fully like it or not. My initial thoughts on the book, is that it is realistic. It does display grief, and how Dillion is living after his brother Preston's suicide. I don't know if I will be finding the book fully enjoyable because I am not that far in it yet for me to see if I like the book. It book's writing seems to be interesting now with the way Chris Crutcher decided to make the introduction. The book connects to the outside, by showing the grief and how someone copes with the loss of a loved one to suicide.

  14. I chose to read Chinese Handcuffs because it sounded the most interesting to me compared to the other options. Due to personal experience with mental health within my family, reading about mental health and understanding other views on it is interesting to me. So far, I am happy with my choice and can already see connections to the real world and present day society. My initial thoughts have varied from confused to uncomfortable but as I keep reading I get more interested and want to read further. Mental health as a whole is very easy to connect to the real world as it is a popular topic today.

It was discrete so i had to keep reading to find more about this Stotan week. I also want to find more about their coach who is a mystery. I hope the book expands on each charterers more in depth then is quiet, is leader, and is normal. This book is like not like a underdog more of not enough people unlike other sports books.

When I read it I l liked how the book was not completely revolved around sports. Also, the book topic of the brothers passing and the letters caught my eye. I am happy with my pick because it continues to exceed my idea of the book. 17. I chose to read running loose because I recently become a football fan and i thought it would be a good option as my first sports related book. I chose running loose as my #1 because I like learning about football the most and wanted to read a story about that game particularly. So far I would say i enjoy the book well enough. The main character seems like a good guy to follow and learning about his relationships with other people in the town was a good way to start. I'm not a huge fan of the writing style, I thought some of the sentence structure was kind of clunky, but its only the beginning of the book so maybe that'll change. All in all I'd say I'm happy with my choice but i hope it ramps up in excitement soon or that it flows better while reading.

  18. So far only being 6 pages into Stotan it appears putting this book in my top three was a good choice. The book has introduced the setting of the story which is in a small town taking place in a high school, which I can relate to. The high school has a very small but successful swim team that takes most of their athletes to state because of their talent. However, they are never able to win any swim meets as a team because of the limited number of participants. I believe I will continue to enjoy this book as it takes place in a relatable setting and is sports focused. I am happy with my book selection at this time.

  19. Running Lose was my 2nd choice to read as a back up to my first pick which was Chinese Handcuffs, but wasn't able to get that book. So I thought I used to play football that I can possibly relate to this book and feel maybe at home. I wouldn't say I'm happy with my choice so far, because I just started reading it and I'm only going through the characters backgrounds and stuff so I have no clue how it's going to go. 22. I choose Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes by Chris Crutcher because it sounded like an interesting book. This book also talks about real life things like mental health problems, body image, ext. So far this book has been good, I have only got to page four and I am already excited to keep reading. The first few pages of this book kind of just spill out what Erics life is like. Eric is the main character in this book and just by reading the first few pages you can understand why she is the way she is. I personally like books that just get right into the good stuff, I don't like books where I have to read a whole three chapters before it actually gets good. And Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes just gets right into it, which is why I am happy I choose this book.

I wanted to know the story line and what happens throughout the book, and I thought what better time than to pick that as one of my top choices. My first initial thought was I really am enjoying it and what I really like is it is wanting me to keep reading. The first chapter it really talked about Erics struggle with his weight and thought of losing Sarahs friendship if he does lose weight. Since Eric and Sarah have a great bond, he has negative thoughts on his weight and their bond.

    1. That sounds like a really compelling book! It’s great that it caught your attention right away. Eric’s struggle with his weight and his friendship with Sarah sounds like a deep and emotional storyline. What do you think makes their bond so strong? Do you think his perspective on his weight will change as the book goes on

  30. I'm reading Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes and I'm pretty happy with it. I think the concept of the book is very interesting, as you don't typically see the "weird kids" point of view. My predictions for the book are that Eric and Sarah will somehow become stereotypically beautiful. My initial thoughts about this book are that I feel bad for Sarah, and I think Eric might not be a very good friend to her in the future (He called her hideous!). I'm intrigued to find out why Sarah isn't communicating with people, my other prediction is that it's because of her father. Overall, this seems like an interesting and inspiring book and I'm excited to see what happens next.

  31. Very unfortunate pick Chase Creek! Maybe it will become more interesting as you read it, books usually start off boring but get better! Hopefully it will turn out good for you!

  32. The reason this book was in my top three is because I think it is going to be interesting to see the friendship between Eric and Sarah and how that effects them separately. I don't really like so far at least how fast it moves to a different topic. I also think it's a little weird the way Eric talks about Sarah even though they are supposed to be best friends. Maybe later in the book there will be a reason why he talks about her in that way.

  33. I chose the book Stoton because it looked very interesting. It was one of my top 3 choices because I like books about sports, it looked very good, and it is a shorter book. I am happy with my choice so far even though it's starting out a bit boring. My initial thoughts are it's not that good of a book right now and it's starting out also very slow and not much is happening worth reading right now. The reading is interesting but that's about it. It is not a enjoyable book currently but it seems like it will get better as I get further

    1. I get what you mean about books starting off slow. Sometimes they take a while to pick up, but hopefully, Stotan gets better as you read more! What specifically do you find interesting about it so far? And do you think the sports aspect will make it more engaging later on?

  34. I hope your book gets better, but it seems like you could have avoided this by picking a better book. I believe how most books work is that they get better overtime. I relate to this because Stoton is also kind of boring.

  35. I chose Running Loose because of its compelling storyline about a high school athlete facing real life challenges. The themes of perseverance and personal growth stood out to me, and I was drawn to Chris Crutcher’s realistic and engaging writing style. So far, I’m happy with my choice. Louie is a relatable character, and the mix of humor and serious moments keeps the story interesting. The book is enjoyable, easy to follow, and thought provoking. I’m making connections to real life situations, especially around fairness and standing up for what’s right. I look forward to seeing how the story unfolds!

  38. i chose running loose because compared to the other books i felt i could relate to it a little better. its about a small town and football so it felt like i could connect to the charters. The other books seemed confusing and unrelatable so it worked out very well. So far i am happy with my choice it is a interesting read and a very relatable book. It also fits my reading style.

  39. i chose to put the book stotan by cris cruncher on the top of my list for books id like to read because its about a high school team and i think i can relate to it. with a small swim team it will be difficult to compete. I've gotten to chapter two so far and am happy with my choice. time will tell though. most of the characters seam to be relatable and interesting.

  40. I picked Chinese Handcuffs because I feel like there is a lot of suspension in it and the summary of it got me hooked. My thoughts on it so far is that it is kind of boring but slowly getting better. The words are all over the place and it does not really make sense at the moment. I hope that the book gets better and that the words are not very confusing.

  45. I chose Running Loose because it looked like an interesting book with some decent story behind it, as well as being able to relate to it slightly being as I played football in the past. My thoughts on the book mostly revolve around how it seems to bounce between past and present tense at times, so I'm wondering where that will lead since the main character hinted at something changing in his life in the first chapter. So far, I'm pretty happy with my choice and look forward to reading more.

  47. I am reading STOTAN! i think it was my top 2 because i want to know what stotan week is and all the main characters sounded interesting. i think im happy so far, and i think one of my favorite characters is nortie because hes kinda the dumb one who signed up for stotan week first to get more information, but didnt get any. So now hes panicking and i think its really funny. I was expecting Chinese handcuffs so when i didnt, i got kinda sad which kinda impacted my thoughts about this book, but now, i think its a fine book. Alot of character introductions are going on right now so not alot has been going on other than not knowing what stotan week is.

  48. The reason Running Loose by Chris Crutcher was in my top 3 is because i wi like sports books a lot. i enjoy reading all about high school athletes ups and downs because they can relate to me so i can get a sense of what that character is feeling in that moment.

  49. My book is Running Loose, I put this book in my top two because the theme is centered around sports, something fun that i can easily connect to making this book one of the few that i think would be able to catch my attention long enough. So far i am happy with the book even though it is progressing slowly. As far as initial thoughts i think it is an interesting story with a good central plot but i cannot speak too much on it since not much has happened so far. However even with the lack of eventfulness the book is still very enjoyable. I feel i cannot make any connections so far since it is still so early in the book.

  50. The main reason i decided to choose Staying fat for Sarah Byrne's was because i was interested in learning why Eric Calhoun E decided to stay fat just for Sarah Byrne's but also the fact that it deals with mental health and as a high school student i understand the mental health part id say that so far I'm happy with my choice because i immediately understood the main characters and what they were going through and the fact that i was immediately drawn into the book so i kept on reading it My initial thoughts about the book were like omg these kids are over dramatic there lives aren't that bad until i got to a part in the book that explained exactly what the characters had been going through and had to deal with and suddenly i understood exactly why they were acting the way they were and my mind changed to be that there not being overdramatic there genuinely that traumatized from there experiences i haven't made any connections to the characters yet but i do find the book interesting.

  51. i chose staying fat for Sarah Brynes because it seemed like a good book and very relatable to the average teen life. so far it is a good book but they are introducing so many characters so early it gets kind of confusing and hard to stay focused. the book goes back and fourth from flashbacks to real time and its a good concept to do but the author should make it more clear when time moves.

  52. I chose Stotan because i found it very interesting how it goes into details about these four boys that are all seniors and the last year of the swim team for Frost High School. I also think that Stotan week is very interesting part of the story because it creates a big challenge for the four boys and how they have to push themselves to be the best. I find Stotan a very interesting book so far and i believe i will continue to enjoy and like the book the more i read and get into the deatils.

  53. I chose Running Loose because it seemed like a better fit for me because I like sports books that are about the sports that I like. I found it interesting that Louise chose to do what was right even though everyone else in his town was on the other side. Louise seems like a character you can really get behind and root for which is one of the main reasons that I chose this as my top book to read.

  54. im reading chinese handcuffs the book is definitaly getting better there are some really weird parts though that make me uncomfortable and want to stop reading like the part were they killed a cat for no reason or the mom that gets with guys that are all the same and keep asulting jeniffer. there is lots of letters dillion writes to his dead brother and its dillions way of handing the death of his brother. because his brother killled him self infront of dillon.

  55. i am reading chinese handcuffs this was one of my choices because i like to read books with topics that feel real and as i am starting to read into this book im happy with my choice the book really gets right into it one thing i dont like to much is how it switches characters so much i hope they all come together and it starts making sense soon, but what i have read so far in some deep things about dillons past but overall the book is good so far its definitely interesting and intense, im exited to read more!

  58. I was not able to choose my book because I joined this class late because I dropped Intro to Lit with KJ the third week of the tri but I had to decide between reading Chinese Handcuffs or Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes. I choose to read the book Staying Fat For Sarah Byrnes because it sounds like a book about friendships between two people that stand by each other when they experience hard times in their life and will always be there for each other. I am starting to read the book and I happy about my choice because it's about having best friends that will stick by your side when your having a rough time. I don't really like how it goes from one subject to another subject and then to a flashback of when they were in high school, but what I have read so far is Eric's swimming practices in high school and his visit with Sarah Byrnes and how she stay's silent . Overall the book is good so far and it's definitely very interesting, but I am excited to read more.

  59. i chose Stotan because it seemed interesting to me and ive always been a huge fan of swimming so i thought i would find this book interesting. my initial reaction when i first started reading was that it was gonna be a very slow paced book becausee it took forever to bring up the plot and problems within the story

  60. I chose to read It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover because I read It Starts With Us and wanted to read more about the story. Initially this book is very interesting. I like how it starts off right at the end of It Ends With us and continues the story. The book starts with Atlas and Lily running into each other in public and then reaching out to each other after. I am interested to read more and see how various relationships develop in the novel.
