Blog Response #10

Each novel has a setting or multiple settings.  How does your author create images of the setting?  If you had to describe the time/place of when your novel takes place, how would you do this?  Does the author use the setting to help develop the plot in your book?  What particular images does the author create that are memorable?  Is there a particular scene you can visualize, and why is this image so vivid? **In response to the blogs, try to make connections with your novel's setting.  How is your setting similar to that of other books?

  1. I have just finished the book, If I Stay by Gayle Forman. This book has multiple settings, because she got into a car accident and can see herself laying in the hospital bed and she can walk around the hospital without anyone seeing her. While that is going on she is also experiencing her childhood again and is talking about the past. Gayle does a very nice job at creating these images with all of her descriptive wording, during the entire book I felt like I was near Mia the entire time because of how much she described things. The place is obviously the hospital foe most of the book. I feel like the author did a good job using the hospital to develop the plot because that is where everything took place. All the images the author described our very memorable to me. I can see Mia laying in the hospital bed, because I have see people I know in the same state as Mia.

  2. In my book the author creates the settings by describing what the main character sees as if you are the main character. i would describe the main characters art studio, i would start off with how bright it is outside, if its cold or hot. i would describe what you see when you first walk into the studio, all the used supplies, the painted canvases. yes, this is where a big section of the questions are being answered in the book. when she paints Gabriel as Jesus or when she paints the famous alcestis and when an intruder breaks in. the scene that is so vivid in the book is when theo is walking around after the man that his wife is cheating on him with ad when he goes around there house and stalks them. my book is similar to other books because of the description the author creates and gives you to imagine

  3. In my book Night the author creates to settings very well as he goes into really good detail about different situations. The main characters seen many disgusting things such as dead people and he goes into detail about what he is seeing which is relatable to many other books. There is a lot off flashbacks in the story and makes you know exactly what the main character is talking about as he is very discriptive and good at describing. During the story is felt like I was there with the main character going through WW2 because of how easy to was to envision what he was going through and seeing. This book is very similer to other books as it is able to make you feel like your there

  4. In my book Th Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. The book has multiple settings, because Amir lived in Afghanistan, then moved to America, and then back to Afghanistan for a special cause. Amir moved to America because Baba lost his servants after Amir placed money and a watch under Hassan's bed and after Ali and Hassan talked Amir knew what happened to Hassan in the alley way that night and Ali told Baba that they couldn't live there anymore. When moving to America Amir, learns how America is a lot different than life in Afghanistan and how the people are treated with respect and don't have to be afraid of the law enforcement. Khaled does a really good job of explaining the scene when Amir goes back to Kabul and sees his old house and how much the town that he lived in has been damaged and how the people in the town are struggling to stay alive and to find food for their children. When Khaled was explaining the towns in Afghanistan when the Taliban arrived I felt like I was near Amir the entire time seeing what he is seeing because of how he described the houses and the people. The scene that is so vivid to me is when at the beginning of the book Hassan was in the alleyway with three other kids that had him corner and Amir watched all Assef the group leader rape Hassan which to me was a very vivid scene for me when I was reading that part and it terrified me because I always thought that Hassan saw Amir standing behind a wall when Amir saw the look in Hassan's eyes. I think that the author did a good job using Afghanistan to develop the plot of the book because I can understand what the people in Afghanistan was struggling in the year of 1989 and how they were struggling when the Taliban showed up. This book is similar to other books that I read because of how the author describes the scenes and the author created and makes you imagine and picture what is happening in the book.

  5. In Night by Elie Wiesel, the author uses strong emotional details to describe the setting, like the crowded train cars, the freezing camps, and the smell of burning flesh. The book takes place during World War II in Nazi occupied Europe mainly in concentration camps like Auschwitz and Buchenwald. The setting is dark and terrifying, and it helps show how Elie changes throughout the story. One scene I remember most is when Elie first sees the flames at Auschwitz and realizes people are being burned. That image is so shocking and unforgettable. The setting makes the plot more intense and emotional. It’s similar to other Holocaust books like Prisoner B-3087 but Night feels more real because it actually happened to the author.

  6. In the book of One for the Murphy's the author describes the setting of the home she is in and what bedroom she sleeps in and the living room. The time and place of the book is very modern and of age for kids and teens, the home is like any childhood home like mine, its not big and its not small. The setting is a huge part in the plot for the book because that's where most the book takes place. Most images are vivid for me because the author creates a good visual for the readers.

Its set in the outdoors in Alaska and you can almost feel like your there looking at everything the way he describes it.one scene that sticks with me is when buck is being shipped in a cage and he is angry and when they let him out he tried to attack but he got beat with a club. 8. In Black Brother Black Brother the first chapter is all about how he wishes he could just be invisible but can't because he is different color form most of the school. When the headmaster's assistance comes to get him they don't tell what he did just tell him to get his stuff and lets go. Then when he ask why and what he did they just head to the door. When he ask why he gets treated bad for just sitting there and turns around to grab his bag the lady just leaves and call police to arrest him. She skips call the parents and just arrest him. He's just a middle schooler trying to get through the day but everyone at that school just see color. I think it sticks in my head the most because why treat someone like they are a waist of space when you don't even know them. Then call the police because they upset you is this rich school having kids run the school, aren't schools suppose to be this safe and understanding place. To me this book reminds me of Malala and how people treated he differently because she was a girl and how if they were a white man they wouldn't be treated so differently.

  9. Jane Austen creates vivid images of the setting in Pride and Prejudice through detailed descriptions of the English countryside, grand estates, and social environments that reflect the class structure and values of early 19th-century England. She uses both physical descriptions and the social atmosphere of places like Longbourn, Netherfield Park, and Pemberley to immerse the reader in the period's customs, expectations, and daily life. The rural setting, with its emphasis on social visits, balls, and estate life, reinforces the importance of marriage, reputation, and class in the plot. One particularly memorable image is the first view of Pemberley. Jane Austen describes the natural beauty of the landscape and the tasteful elegance of the home in such a way that it stands out clearly in the reader's mind. This is vivid to me because it’s both a physical description and an emotional turning point, it’s when Elizabeth starts to truly reconsider her feelings for Mr. Darcy.

  10. I am reading the book Game changer by Neal Shusterman. The setting is quite normal. It is a simple town with a simple school. Maybe Ash's house part way threw the book becomes a large house but the setting is one of the least important parts. The concept and character change is more of a focus. The most memorable setting in the book is the Abandon Toy r us where the aliens live. With a basic tv but some box that allows them to see who the center of the universe is.

  11. In the first few chapters of Local Woman Missing, the author describes a quiet suburban neighborhood that seems normal at first, but there’s something creepy underneath. The way she talks about the streets, houses, and even the woods nearby makes you feel like something bad is going to happen. It’s supposed to be a safe place, but it doesn’t feel that way. The story seems to take place in modern times because the characters use phones and live like people do today. The setting is important because it helps build the mystery. When a woman goes missing, it feels even scarier because it's happening in a place where people think they’re safe. One image that really stands out is the woods near the neighborhood. They’re dark and creepy, and you can imagine someone getting lost or hurt there. It’s easy to picture and adds to the scary feeling of the story. The setting is the same as a movie i know, I am not sure about a book, the movie is called Open House, and it has a very gloomy dark theme to it. Just like my book.

  12. My novel is Prince Caspian which is a story with a fantasy setting, because of this there's a lot of detailed description, but surprisingly of many places. Starting off the time and place is an island in a timeless world, not literally but the characters travel thousands of years and while it changes, not in a big enough way that the years matter, it can really take place at any time. The author describes extremely dense forests with rivers and a particular area that is endless with apple trees. Most of the book takes place in these areas with old castles and new settlements being set here. Otherwise the characters go to both an icy peak and a damp cave for an adventure. The icy peak is described as extremely magical, with flat planes at the top and magical creatures just walking around. Then the cave is occupied with civilized rats with their own little village and fight each other. The book seems focused on large setting that are either densely packed or barren, and due to this setting it doesn't have much in common with other books in the class at all.

  13. The novel I'm reading is The House Across the Lake and it takes place on a lake in Vermont and the author does a good job at making it feel creepy and mysterious. He describes the lake in a way that makes it seem spooky, like it is always cloudy and dark and a lot of the times you never know what's going on across the lake. The author also uses a lot of details to help readers picture the setting, like the sound of the water, the creaky old cabin of where the main character lives, and how the house across the lake looks modern but kind of suspicious. These images can make it easy for us to imagine how the characters are feeling and seeing. A scene that I can picture very vividly is when Casey is using binoculars to spy on her neighbors across the lake and seeing the big modern house with big windows and the lights on. Seeing the husband and wife arguing and the husband abusing her.

  14. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie paints a really good picture of Auschwitz, and also Birkenau. One image that he made stick in my mind was the crematoria at Birkenau. Elie made this image ingrained into my mind because of all the detail he talked about, such as the children being thrown into the fire, and the smell he had to smell at Birkenau. The setting definitely does help develop the plot of Night. The book Night takes place around 1940 during World War Two and at the start of it when the Jews did not really know what was full going on and they thought they were just going to these camps to wait out the war but when they arrived at Auschwitz they quickly understand that they are not just going to wait out the war and they are going to be tortured and worked like never before.

  16. Colleen Hoover does a great job at creating images of the scenes and setting in her novels. She uses popular cities and places so the reader is possibly already familiar with the setting. Colleen uses descriptive language to put the reader in the setting where her novel takes place. This novel is based in the heart of Boston in present day. She depicts this through the hustling atmosphere of the city and the public around her characters. The most vivid and memorable images are in the common places the characters are in. Lily's flower shop and apartment are described in great detail along with Atlas's restaurants and home. One particular scene that I can visualize the most is when Atlas finds his brother behind his restaurant, this is because Colleen describes the environment and feeling Atlas is in. She puts the reader into Atlas's shoes and explains what is surrounding him in the alley. This image is so vivid due to its descriptive nature and it is a turning point in the novel.

  17. I am reading Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki and there really is not a huge meaning or reason for the setting. It is a non-fiction book so all things that happened in the book are real. In the first half of the book, he is retelling the story of when he was a kid and how he became so wealthy financially but also knowledge as well. As a kid he describes going to his Rich Dads house and having to wait in his living room for over an hour before meeting with Rich Dad. Also, he is at Rich Dads convenience store for a small portion of the book. But most of the book is just Robert just explaining different techniques, strategies and lessons that should be taken away from the book. After he stops going super in depth into his childhood experiences there really isn't a setting anymore.

  18. I am reading The Grace Year by Kim Liggett. My author uses a lot of detail when describing the settings of this book. For example, the town square she said is always bustling with people and full of shops. On the way to the camp, Liggett uses a lot of vivid imagery. She describes the giant trees that surround the camp, the large wooden gate, the vast forest, and the dingey shacks the girls sleep in. A setting that is very easy for me to picture is the girl's outhouse. One of the girls opens the door and flies started pouring out of it. Imagining this was so disgusting I will not forget it. Another scene that is easy for me to envision is the girl that drowns herself on the way to the camp. Kiersten, the leader, touches the water after telling all of the girls she can control people with her magic. Immediately after that a girl slips out of her boat and drowns herself. She had been collecting rocks, so she wasn't actually being controlled. That scene was very intense for me; drowning would be a horrible way to die.

  19. In King of Wrath by Ana Huang, the setting is in New York most of the time. This is in the high end of town where the rich high secret society people live, that the general public would not know about. I would say that this around 2018 and in the high end New York. The plot of the book is definitely developed because if it was not in the rich area the book would not have taken place because it was an arranged marriage because of money for the one family. The image that comes to my mind is their dining room because I can see a long table and the wall being darker and then the expensive paintings on the wall, them sitting next to each other and his food not touching and then her moving it to touch so he got mad. This picture is so vivid because it happens on more than occurrence.

She makes it easy for all of her readers to understand and imagine what is happening in her book. I think this book takes places over a month span of two couples in their mid 20's. Throughout the book the author hints at the plot by Ethan cheating on Quinn with a girl he works with. Come to find out it has been happening for months and it also shows how Quinn and Graham meet. Quinn finds out when she comes home early after being away with her sister for a week. I would describe the main character to be one who would stick up for others and just wants everyone to be treated the same, from the beginning of the book the author really described what he went through during the holocaust and described every single detail. You can really feel what he was going through and you can picture everything that is happening to not only him but also his family members. The one thing that I can visualize clearly is when the officers burst into their home and broke all of the dishes and threatened Leon's family to the point where they took his dad outside and beat him until he could barley move right in front of everyone and then took him right to jail just for not telling the officers were his valuables are.

  30. i am reading Whitetail Nation by Pete Bodo, and the author creates different scenes such as his tree stand, his house, his car, and the area in which he lives. he uses great detail and each minute detail gives the book more realism and makes you feel like your right there with him. the scenes i can visualize the clearest is when he is in his tree stand and out hunting, because i have been in the same situation.

  31. I am reading The adoration of Jenna Fox. The time and place in this book is very important. The book takes place in the future, but i am not sure when in the future this story takes place. The author does expand this time into the plot very well. She is not remembering who she since she got out of the coma, but she learns that this new futuristic technology that her dad invented made is so she could survive the accident that she was not supposed to survive. This technology to help her remember who she is and get a lot of her old self back also helps her to live for hundreds of years. I think some of the moments in this story the author describes that i remember are that there have been 2 more great depressions, another pandemics and 3 women presidents. These descriptions show how far this book is into the future, and how much life is different for them.

  32. Tolkien helps readers picture the places in The Hobbit by using simple but strong descriptions. For example, when Bilbo is in Mirkwood, Tolkien says it was “really pitch” dark, so black you couldn’t see anything. This makes the forest feel scary and hard to get through. Later, when they see the Lonely Mountain, it’s called “solemn, grim, and grey,” which makes it sound big and serious. These kinds of words help readers imagine what the places look and feel like.

    3. i find that Percy Jackson and The Hobbit are very much alike because all the main characters are exploring places theyve never been to and have to come up with ways out of danger and was very unexpected to the respective main characters

  33. I am reading Moneyball by Michael Lewis, and I think the author does a really good job creating the scene when Scott Hatteberg hit a walk-off homerun to secure the Oakland Athletics 20 game win streak with his detailed description of the sounds the fans made when that ball hit his bat and the way the stadium erupted into cheers when that ball made its way to the second deck in right field. It just gave me chills.

  34. I am reading the book Speak, and Melinda sets the setting in school and home for most of the story. Sometimes she goes to Heathers house, she likes to describe the way she feels in the setting. She describes the images by the color and appearance, and how she feels. For example if it is the art room, she describes it as, the paint stains cover the floors, the sun gleams through the windows, I feel the tension in the room as the teacher stands in the front of the room. She describes it so the reader can feel what she is feeling, and see what she is seeing. The scene that I can visualize the easiest, or the image that i remember the most vividly is when Melinda is in Heathers room and she spilt the nail polish all over the carpet, i remember this because i thought Heather would have been super mad, but it turns out she wasn't. She described it as a dark green stain all of the carpet. Melinda darted out of the room to hide her cries.

  36. In Dawn by Elie Wiesel, the setting of post World War II Palestine amplifies the novel's tension and moral struggles. Elisha faces an internal conflict while preparing to execute captain John Dawson. Wiesel uses imagery, like darkness and light, to symbolize this struggle. A memorable scene occurs in a cold, dimly lit room where Elisha wrestles with vengeance. The setting, much like in Night, shapes the characters' decisions and emphasizes their emotional turmoil.

  37. i am reading after life by Gayle Forman the way Gayle creates the setting in a small town and she describes it very well almost like you feel like you our there she has a very good way of creating an image, the time of my book is like now so it is very easy to understand and everything is up to date. one thing that i visualize well in this book is when amber goes into town looking for her ex boyfriend and when she finds him at his house the other puts lots of detail into it giving both of there point of views and what each of them are seeing calvin her ex catches her staring at him and she takes off. the author is great at putting in lots of detail

  39. I'm reading The Way of Kings, and the setting is one that is very much reminiscent of medieval times, with most of the world being covered by various kingdoms and several other iterations of knights, commoners, kings, and just amazingly beautiful descriptions of a truly gorgeous world. I really love Brandon Sanderson's description of how the Shattered Plains are just such winding canyons and scattered staging grounds for warfare. Overall, Sanderson just has such a way of describing the surroundings in this book with such simple beauty that I don't believe I have seen in any other books.

  40. Well, in the book I'm reading called Purple Heart he has man name Private Duffy in a hospital and he got injured on the business end of the RPG. He has a lot of descriptive scenes in the the hospital where he is looking out o-f the window and watching the kids play soccer in the lot in front of the hospital. Or he describes the scene what happened to him and how he got hurt and that they were in a gun fight with the hijas. The most vivid scene was the fighting scene where Duffy got injured.

  41. In the book Night by Elie Wiesel, Elie writes a really good picture of Auschwitz, and also Birkenau. One image that he made stick in my mind was the cremation station at Birkenau. Elie wiesel, made this image ingrained into my mind because of all the detail he talked about, such as the children being thrown into the fire, and the smell he had to smell at Birkenau.

  42. the book i'm reading doesn't have like a storyline therefore there really isn't a setting, however there is a scene in the book that describes the time where my author and his friend were talking and taking advice from his friends father in a park. In the beginning of the book it takes place in a small plantation town in Hawaii around the 1960's. The author isn't a descriptive storyline type of writer, he writes in a more informative way.

  43. I'm reading the formula by Joshua Robinson, and the setting is not very important because you jump from place to place in the world, from continent to continent. we focus about a tiny moment in time and its usually about a person not a place and the setting doesn't matter, because most of the time the setting is briefly talking about a race track. the only time so far that the setting gets talked about is the McLaren head quarters where he does a great job explain how the inside is the most professional and scientific looking building you've seen

  44. I think that something in my book that helps with the visualizing is the different POVs. This is more about the physical setting and not the time period but I think that the different POVs is the books has what made this series so interesting to read, at least for me. Something that has to do with the author incorporating the time period is the fact that in the books is that the plot is based from technology because of the different apps and the billboard that was a screen that could be changed at anytime compared to an actual billboard with a picture on it.

  45. I am reading thousand splendid suns and this books setting is in Afghanistan so life there is a little different. For one girls get married at a young age and most of the time they are forced into it. After Mariam got married at 15 she was forced to go 650 kilometers away from her. Now no one that she knows can visit her. along with that there is a war that is going on in Afghanistan. their soldiers are fighting them off pretty good but that is still scary to think about. like imagine a war breaking out a state away from us. I'm getting out as soon as possible. the author does a good job with depicting Laila's moms depression. she has very few good day but the few days that are good is when she bakes and cooks such good food and invites everyone in the neighborhood to eat food. but majority of her day are bad and she doesn't get out of her room even when she is told to pick up her own daughter. The book i am Malala, the setting is also in Afghanistan so the book is similar in that aspect. different stories but still great reads.

  46. im reading Percy Jackson, the lightning thief and this book takes place over a ton of settings, from his home to his school to the museum, to his cabin on the beach to camp half blood and all over the country to the St louis arch and las vegas. Rick Riordan definetely uses his settings to progress the plot every setting he describes is through the eyes of Percy which puts his own spin on everything he describes but the most memorable setting was one of percys dreams, he was on a beach and farther down the beach two men were fighting and there was a massive storm going on and it felt as if the storm and the sky were fighting. when he described all of this i could envision this scene playing out through my imagination.

  47. [The author in my book that I'm reading The Kite Runner most time says when the time period is, for example March 1981. I say the time the author wrote this book was how people were treated back then and specifically how he was treated by his dad back then and how his neglected him and didn't give him much attention because the author's mom died while giving birth to him and how his dad wants the author to follow in his footsteps and be interested in everything the father was before the author was born and I also think this all takes place in the 1900's. I don't know how I would do that it just seems difficult to me to do that. The author does use the setting to help develop the plot in my book, he gives the time periods and information on what him and his friend does and how his father neglects him and doesn't give him attention or anything like that and to me that's a little bit of abuse but not physical abuse. He talks about how him and his friend Hassan I believe it is how they climb a tree and use a mirror to shine sunlight into their neighbors house through the window and I keep imagining that, I also keep imagining when The author is on his dad's lap listening to what his dad thinks sin is, and I also keep imagining the author's dad on the phone with someone saying he never acted how his son acted when he was his sons age. I'm still visualizing the author's father talking to him while the author is on his father's lap and his father on the phone with a friend talking about what the author does and how he doesn't act like that and never acted like that, it's intense because the author's father is just neglecting him and really distant to him.

  48. I read the book Night by Elie Wiesel and the setting in the beginning of the story was a tightly packed apartment with way to many people in it. This setting was where the whole first part of the book happened up until they got taken to there first camp. The most vivid setting that was in this book was when there was this teacher that was looking out the metal bars while they were in a cattle car with 80 people packed in it. She got separated from her family and all she could see was a big fire and when she was screaming about it a group of people were beating her until she was not saying anything anymore.
