Blog Response #6

In all five novels, the main character or characters face adversity in one way or another.  Describe how you view the character's challenges in your book, and talk about how your character handles the hardships and struggles.  If you were in your main character/characters situation, how would you handle yourself?  What would you do?

  1. I'm reading kite runner and one of the main characters friends hassan has a way harder time than amir the main character. Hassans dad is amirs dads servant and is very poor. Hassan also is born different than most and has distinctive features that he gets mocked for. He is very loyal to his friend amir but amir is not the same way to hassan which is unfortunate. If I was him there is not a lot you can do because he can't change his appearance or the fact that he's poor.

    4. Yeah, definitely true how Hassan will most likely go his entire life being mocked and ridiculed just based off his looks and heritage. Lowkey makes me so mad how even his "Best Friend" also treats him like crap when he is literally the nicest little boy on the planet.

  2. im reading the book The Kite Runner and the main character Amir handles the challenge of remembering his past as a kid when his servant Hassan was Sexually assaulted and due to his guilt of not saving Hassan, he did the unthinkable and framed Hassan for stealing after he placed an envelope of money and an expensive watch under Hassans bed. If i was the main character i would have tried anything to save Hassan and if i couldn't then I'd tell an adult and get help.

  3. I am reading A Long Way Gone and both Ishmael and his friend Talloi are having really hard times right now. Currently, they are running away from the Rebels. As days go by, they see more and more death and tragic moments. I think the challenges they are facing are the most surreal, as they are in the midst of a war and at any moment could be killed. If I were in Ishhmael's shoes, I would handle the situation the same way he is, and I would try to run as far and fast as i can, for as long as I can.

  4. In I am Malala she faces a lot of sexism. Now the thought of going to school is the hardest thing in the world. Before the Taliban can it was ok to have girls and boys enter through different doors. Now with this radio host and Taliban targeting the school girls are leaving the school because of the presser of safety. If I was Malala I would have left the school long age but she is a fighter and wont be threat easily.

  5. I'm reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, and one of the main characters Mariam faces challenges by having to get married to an older guy so young. She was treated poorly by him and was forced t get pregnant and have his kid but she lost the baby. Mariam deals with the struggles at a very slow rate and doesn't really try to leave or anything. I think she doesn't really care how she's treated because she was forced into this and she has a place to stay. If I was Mariam I would try to run away from Rasheed and go and find my other family members or friends, anything to get away from him.

  7. I am currently reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and the character in my book that faces adversity is Laila. I view her challenges as upsetting, tough, complicated, and upsetting. she handles these situations very well compared to her mother who just sits and sulks she still gets up everyday and does her best to protect and survive for herself. If i was in my characters situation i would not handle myself the same as her, she is quick to thinking after getting put through lots. i would i be upset and probably sit around for awhile and think about all the bad that has happened in such a short time.

  8. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. On of the main characters in the book is Mariam Jo who faces terrible events in her life. At first Mariam was born without her father present in the household and he visited her every Thursday for an hour then leaves again to spend time with his wives children. Mariam then lost her mom due to her hanging herself when Mariam left to go to Herat. Mariam then was forced to marry Rasheed and to have his baby which she had several miscarriages. Mariam handles all her challenges by handling her grief by crying when by herself and praying for the baby that she lost. Mariam handles living with Rasheed by letting her get used to her new life and then becoming a normal wife by cleaning the house and making supper. If I was Mariam I would struggle at first with her new life and then I would process that this is my life now and I have to deal with it. I would be angry if my dad gave me away to an older man for marriage and wants to say that he is sorry for doing it and wants to visit more.

  9. In the book Night Elie was brought to the concentration camps and was forced to do manual labor and he was given little to no food while there. While he was there he was forced to say goodbye to his mother and his sister knowing he might not ever see the two of them ever again. He was forced to run every morning to be tested to see if they were fit to be kept or sent of and killed. If I were in the characters position I think it would suck but I think I would do anything they asked to keep surviving. seeing my mother and sister get taken away it would be really heartbreaking and would be tuff to go through.

He dose not know where is next meal will come from and has been in so many near death experiences. he survives by running and hiding from the rebels trying to escape this war that he has to deal with. if i were in his shoes i do not think i could last vary long not knowing who to trust and what to eat. i would try my best to survive but do not think i could for as long as he has.

  15. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah goes through a lot of hard times early in the book. He has already lost his home, been separated from his family, and is constantly running from the rebels. He and his friends go days without food, and they never know who to trust. Even when they meet other villages, people are scared of them and think they’re dangerous. Ishmael feels confused, lonely, and scared, but he keeps going because he wants to survive and find his family. If I were in his situation, I would be really scared too. I’d try to stay with people I trust and keep moving, just like Ishmael does. I don’t think it would be easy, but I’d try my best not to give up hope. Ishmael’s strength shows that even in really hard times, people can keep going

  16. I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. The character's name in the book is also Elie, and he has faced a lot of hardships in the story. In the beginning he gets taken out of his home, and transported in a train to Auschwitz. In the train they were borderline starved as well as dehydrated. They started going crazy, it was cold in there too. In Auschwitz they were separated from their families, shaved, undressed, beaten, and much more. Elie sticks by his dads side the whole time, trusting him that they will get through this together. That's how they are still alive so that's what they're going to continue doing. I couldn't imagine myself in my characters position, the things that jews went through is horrible, and hi honestly do not know what I'd do if i was in their position.

When Ishmael was caught by the rebels they were lined up, humiliated, and threatened to be killed. However, Ishmael and his friends are lucky enough that they have the opportunity to escape where Elie has no way of escaping.

  18. In the novel I am Malala, the main character, Malala, faces great challenges including sexism and access to education. The challenges that she explains are happening in Pakistan are very similar to the challenges children still face there today. It is hard for me to comprehend the extent of the sexism as in the United States we are very fortunate to have freedoms for both genders. Malala handles her struggles well for her age and does everything that she can to still have an access to education. Though the Taliban is everywhere in her hometown she still is strong willed and continues to go to school. If I were in her position I think I would stop going to school out of fear that I would be the Taliban's next target.

  20. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns and a way that Mariam faced a hardship was through her father and mother. Mariam wanted to go out with her father to his cinema and her father told her he would meet her in this exact spot at 11:30 and her father never showed up. Mariam ended up going all the way to his house, but when she got there her father's workers where telling her he was away for work and Mariam waited until it was almost dark out. I think Mariam's father was lying. This is hard for her because she feels like her father does not want to do anything with her. Her mother likes to make up stories about Mariam's father and say he was never there for her the way she was, her mother seems very protective over Mariam. If I was the main character I think I would do anything to get away because Mariam's mom seems crazy and also bipolar.

Ishmael does the best he can in these situations by staying calm and making sure that him and his friends stay alive and together. If I was the main character, I would run for the ocean like Ishmael did and try to stay with people I knew and trusted to keep some company around in these hard times. 28. I'm reading I Am Malala. For almost the entire first section of this book she does not talk about her personal struggles at all. She mostly talks about her parents, well mainly her father's, struggles with marriage and being poor. I think this book should've been called I Am Ziauddin with how much she talks about her father's struggles. I can say that Malala did have some kinds of struggles when it came to the rules women are expected to follow in Pakistan. She can't drive or leave the house without a man, but her father still lets her get an education and pretty much be free and do what she wants. She really doesn't have a very hard life (from what I'm seeing) until she speaks out and gets shot. Even after she gets shot, (which has not even been mentioned in the book yet and I'm almost halfway through it...) it boosts her career, and she can talk more about women's rights. If I were Malala, I would probably focus my book more on women's right rather than my family struggles. I also probably wouldn't have spoken out knowing the Taliban would come get me because that's just a death wish. I don't understand why people continue to live in Pakistan when there are so many horrible rules and dangerous people. Maybe use the money you had to buy an entire school to move your family into a safe place, Ziauddin.

She does not do much to speak up and fight him. She did try to run away with Laila but he caught them and beat Mariam. If I were Mariam, I do not know if there was anything I could do. The setting is very patriarchal and does not support women. Even with everything Mariam has gone through. she is still very strong. I would not be as strong as Mariam

    1. This sounds like a very good interesting book, the way you explain she was forced to marry a guy at a young age and that he abuses her which she tries to run away from him has me hooked into the book now and makes me want to read it now.

    2. Your book seems hard to read when topics like that. In my book something different happens but I can relate to not knowing what I would do if I was in my main characters shoes.

  34. I am reading I am Malala. She and her people face adversity by the Taliban. The Taliban is killing people, and trying to take over. People are having their male kids join the Taliban to keep them safe. I view Malala's challenges hard, she is in fear for her life. She can no longer go to school as the Taliban has blow up schools. Malala faces the hard ships by staying strong. She does this documentary and article/ journal (she does use a code name in the article/journals) to give light and a human view on the things happening with the Taliban. With me I wouldn't try and do that, to keep my life. I would try to escape the madness going on. If I was not able to escape, I would just keep my head down until they are done, I wouldn't want a target on my back.

  35. I am reading night, Elie goes through a lot of adversity and challenges. He is taken out out of his home town and put into a concentration camp. He had to watch his mother and sister get taken away, its given that they were killed. They are seeing burning bodies, and jews being murdered every day. He is having to run several miles every day to see if they are fit, so they can be useful to the Germans. If they were not useful they were killed. If i was in his situation i would continue to do labor for the Germans, because i had my father with me and just do what they asked of me and maybe good things would happen.

  36. Wow, this book sounds interesting. I don't think i could continue to keep going after seeing all of these people die already. I am surprised Ishmael is handling this situation well.

  37. We haven't gotten that far in the book I Am Malala yet, she's still talking about her family and people at school. Every person she introduces there's a meaning to their name and she explains that, some aren't that good she explains that some of the meanings to some of their names are sad. She also talks about how she used to be at the top of the class but a new classmate named Malka-e-Noor joined their class and competed with Malala with the end of the school year exam and beat Malala, which Malala was not happy about that and ended up going home to cry to her mother about it so her mother comforted her. Then after that I think Malala was fine about coming in second place after Malka-e-Noor got first place. I don't how I would handle it, it seems like a lot of stress to go through and a lot of name meanings to remember and explain so I don't know how I would handle it. I truly don't know what I would do either it just seems a lot of is going on in her life even though were not to the good part yet but it just seems like Malala is under a lot of stress already before she gets to explaining about how she was shot.

  39. I'm reading Kite Runner, and the main character Amir struggles to cope with the fact that when his best friend Hassan got raped, he was too scared to help him. He tries to act like he has no idea about what had happened, but he cant really handle the guilt, so he does evil things to Hassan in an effort to get him to lash back at him to make things even in a sense, but he ends up just putting more guilt on himself. I personally think that Amir is an idiot for trying to handle things the way he did, but if i was in his position, first off, woulda helped Hassan of course, but in the case that i didn't, i would have just been honest, being honest and putting the whole thing behind us would have been a way simpler option.

  40. I am reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, I would say the main character is Mariam. In this novel I feel like Mariam really struggles with her relationship with her mother Nana. I know in one part of the book Nana called Mariam a bastard. Nana also says all of these awful things about Mariam's dad. I think that everything Nana says about Mariam's dad is a lie, especially because Mariam's dad always says how much he loves her and that Nana is lying about the things she says.

  41. In The Kite Runner Amir does not face hardship well. There was the situation with Hassen when Amir handled it very badly. He did not do anything when it happened and he just decided to walk away and pretend that it didn't happen. After that instead of making it right and or still pretending nothing happened he made everything way worse. He felt bad and regret for what he did and then took those emotions and pushed Hassen even farther away. He made Hassen even more alone when he should've done the opposite.

    1. I think this is very interesting because it reminds me of my book (A Long Way Gone) in the sense that when Ishmael first encountered all of the problems he is facing, he was a lot more emotional and even felt guilty at times for the hardships he had faced, as well as the hardships others around him had faced.

  42. In A Long Way Gone, Ishmael Beah goes through a lot of hard times, like losing his family and being forced to become a child soldier. He deals with a lot of pain, violence, and fear, but somehow he manages to keep going. Even when things get really bad, he doesn’t completely give up. When he gets a chance to recover, he slowly learns how to trust people again and starts to heal. If I were in his situation, I don’t know if I could handle it the way he did. I’d probably be scared and feel hopeless, but I’d try to stay strong and remember who I was before everything changed. Ishmael’s story shows how strong people can be, even when everything seems impossible.

  43. I am reading A Long Way Gone, and the main character, Ishmael, is in the middle of a war that is spreading throughout his country. As the book progresses, the reader can see just how much this war affects Ishmael, as we can see his differences in mindset and attitude as he goes from town to town, group to group. I think Ishmael handles the situations the best one could, given his young age and the situation at hand. In his place, I genuinely don't know how well I would do, but I do know I would certainly want to fight.

  44. I definitely think that this book is one where the reader has a lot to think about, especially considering the raw emotion and graphic nature that this book presents as purely common (which is to be expected in times of war). I do think it is intriguing how it progresses into a more blank expression of the graphic details, compared to the emotional descriptions in the beginning of the book, almost as though Ishmael himself is showing how his mind changed over the course of the story.

  45. I am reading Along Way Gone, and the main characters name is Ishmeal and I think that in the situations he is in he definitely needs to play more cautious when just wondering from village to village knowing the rebels are after him I think he's not being smart and kind of just inviting himself to these villages and taking food and supplies before leaving the next day for the rebels to invade the village without them being there. And I think if I were in Ishmael's shoes I would try to stay safe in one village until he was forced to move instead of trying to live every day on the brick of nothing and just low supplies

  46. I'm just surprised that he's still alive in these situations he's in and how he's
just slipping through and getting away from the rebels and making his way out of everything

  47. I am reading a long way gone and some of the hardships he is going through are trying to stay alive by looting and trying to survive the war that is about to break out and flip the entire country's way of life. if i had the same hardships as ishmeal i would try my hardest to just get out of the country and get somewhere safe. i would try and protect myself and stay alive.

  48. I am reading I am Malala the main character Malala faces many challenges including access to education. Malala does everything she can to get the education she and all other girls can get she starts a blog to get out there about everything she was going through. Due to sexism the girls are getting very little education and have very little rights. If I was put in Malala situation, I would not continue to go to school being the Taliban target would be my fear.
